The Agro Pontino is a flat, intensively farmed plain in southern Lazio that, less than 100 years ago, was nothing but malarial marshland. In the mid-1920s over 50,000 workers dug an elaborate network of around 250 drainage canals; within a decade nearly 300 km² of swamp was reclaimed.

Mussolini raised the town of Littoria (today Latina) as a model of fascist architecture — a flat, angular grid city, utterly unlike Lazio's typical hill towns. Settlers came from the Veneto and Friuli in northern Italy. Only now, in the third and fourth generations, are the sharp contours of that dark legacy fading.

Today the Agro Pontino is Lazio's most important breadbasket; its 22 pumping and drainage stations still draw international delegations. A surprising local product: kiwis, of which the area is one of Italy's largest producers. Nearby, Sabaudia and Sperlonga offer beautiful beaches minutes away.

A metà degli anni '20 oltre 50.000 lavoratori scavarono una fitta rete di circa 250 canali di bonifica; in un decennio furono recuperati quasi 300 km² di palude.

Mussolini fece sorgere la città di Littoria (oggi Latina) come modello di architettura fascista — una città a griglia piatta e squadrata, ben diversa dai tipici borghi collinari del Lazio. I coloni arrivarono dal Veneto e dal Friuli. Solo ora, alla terza e quarta generazione, i contorni netti di quella eredità si attenuano.

Oggi l'Agro Pontino è il principale granaio del Lazio; le sue 22 stazioni idrovore attirano ancora delegazioni internazionali. Un prodotto sorprendente: i kiwi, di cui l'area è tra i maggiori produttori d'Italia. Vicino, Sabaudia e Sperlonga offrono spiagge bellissime a pochi minuti.

Siedler kamen aus dem Veneto und Friaul. Erst jetzt, in der dritten und vierten Generation, verblassen die scharfen Konturen dieses dunklen Erbes.

Heute ist das Agro Pontino die wichtigste Kornkammer Latiums; seine 22 Pump- und Entwässerungsanlagen ziehen noch immer internationale Delegationen an. Ein überraschendes Produkt: Kiwis, die hier in einer der größten Mengen Italiens angebaut werden. In der Nähe bieten Sabaudia und Sperlonga wunderschöne Strände.
