Tarquinia

UNESCO World Heritage Etruscan necropolis with painted tombs

Tarquinia is one of the most important archaeological sites in Italy, renowned for its extraordinary Etruscan necropolis with painted tombs. This UNESCO World Heritage site offers a rare glimpse into the sophisticated artistic achievements of the Etruscan civilization.

The Monterozzi Necropolis, located on a plateau near the modern town, contains thousands of tombs dating from the 7th century BC to the 2nd century BC. What makes this site truly exceptional are the 200+ tombs decorated with vibrant frescoes, representing the largest collection of pre-Roman painting in the Mediterranean basin.

These painted chambers depict scenes of daily life, banquets, hunting, fishing, sports, and religious ceremonies, providing invaluable insights into Etruscan society, beliefs, and customs. The most famous tombs include the Tomb of the Leopards, with its lively banquet scene; the Tomb of the Augurs, showing funeral games; and the Tomb of Hunting and Fishing, with its naturalistic landscapes.

In the town center, the National Archaeological Museum of Tarquinia, housed in the Renaissance Palazzo Vitelleschi, displays an impressive collection of artifacts recovered from the necropolis, including sarcophagi, pottery, jewelry, and the remarkable terracotta winged horses that once adorned the Ara della Regina temple.

Tarquinia itself is a charming medieval town with well-preserved walls, towers, and churches. The historic center features narrow winding streets, picturesque squares, and the impressive Church of Santa Maria di Castello with its Gothic-Lombard architecture.

As one of the most powerful cities of the Etruscan League, Tarquinia played a crucial role in the development of Etruscan civilization and its influence on Roman culture. Today, it offers visitors an extraordinary journey into Italy's pre-Roman past.
